Prediction and odds for the game: Chelsea (4/11) vs Southampton (8/1)

We are backing under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 11/10

When: Saturday 2 October 2021, kick-off 15:00

Where: Stamford Bridge

On Saturday afternoon, Chelsea host Southampton at Stamford Bridge, as the Blues look to return to the top of the Premier League, at least temporarily anyway.

Chelsea

Thomas Tuchel’s team head into this clash on the back of two straight 1-0 defeats against Manchester City and Juventus. The former defeat ended Chelsea’s five-game unbeaten run at the start of the Premier League campaign. A record of four wins and one defeat from their six league games so far this season is not a terrible record considering the opposition they have faced.

The Blues are still just a point behind league leaders Liverpool and a win could move the Blues to the top of the table temporarily, depending on what happens at Old Trafford between Manchester United and Everton.

Chelsea have been relatively strong in defence this season in the Premier League, as they have kept clean sheets in four of their previous six games in the English top-flight.

The City defeat ended a run of three straight home wins in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge for the Blues. The result also ended a prolific run of scoring form for Tuchel’s team on home soil in the Premier League, as they had scored at least two goals in their previous three top-flight outings.

Southampton

The team from the south coast currently sit just a point above the relegation zone after an underwhelming start to the new Premier League campaign. The Saints have failed to win any of their six games in the English top-flight this season, as the visitors have picked up four draws and suffered two defeats. In fact, Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team has now failed to win in eight Premier League dating back to last season.

The Saints have struggled for goals in the English top-flight of late, having failed to score in five of their last eight games, including failing to score in their last three league outings.

Southampton have been poor travellers of late in the Premier League, as the Saints have won just one of their previous 16 away games in the English top-flight. Poor defensive displays have been at the heart of the visitor’s recent poor form on their travels, having conceded at least two goals in seven of their last eight away matches in the Premier League.

Conclusion

Chelsea are looking to bounce straight to winning ways, while the Saints are looking for their first league win of the season. We fancy the Blues to record a narrow win, but it may not be a heavy victory. The first bet we are backing is under 2.5 goals scored, as Chelsea are strong in defence, while Southampton have struggled upfront. We are also backing Chelsea to win to nil, as it is difficult to see the visitors scoring at Stamford Bridge.

Our tips: We are backing under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 11/10 and/or Chelsea to win to nil at odds of 5/4. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
