According to various media sources, the Manchester United hierarchy met on Saturday night to discuss the future of head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The meeting came on the back of a 4-1 defeat at Watford, a game that saw the Red Devils record a fifth loss in their last seven top-flight outings.

Reports suggest that the club’s key figures are undecided on whether the Norwegian will continue in his position. However, all signs point to Solskjaer’s tenure with United ending. If the club icon leaves then here are just some of the likely candidates for the position:

Zinedine Zidane

The Frenchman certainly has the managerial credentials to take the reigns at Manchester United after two trophy-laden periods with Real Madrid. Zidane left the Spanish giants in the summer.

He won the Spanish top-flight title on two occasions, while also helping Los Blancos to the Champions League trophy three times during his two spells in the capital. No doubt he would command the respect of the players, especially the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane, who he worked with in Madrid.

Brendan Rodgers

The Leicester boss has become one of the go-to names when it comes to jobs becoming available at so-called big-six clubs in recent seasons. Having already managed Liverpool, he has since been linked with jobs at Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea in recent years.

Reports earlier this week suggested that Manchester United have already made tentative enquiries about the availability of the Northern Irishman. Rodgers has certainly impressed during his time with the Foxes, although this season his team have been mediocre.

Erik ten Hag

The Dutch head coach credited with reviving the fortunes of Dutch giants Ajax. The style of football his team plays is expansive and exciting football. A brand of football any set of fans would appreciate.

Ten Hag was linked with the vacant Spurs job in the summer. However, there was speculation that the Dutchman was reluctant to leave the club from Amsterdam for Spurs because he was unsure about the ambition of Tottenham’s hierarchy.

The 51-year-old would look like an obvious candidate for the job. Whether he would risk his relatively comfortable position in the Dutch capital to take over what is fast becoming a mess in Manchester is unknown. However, maybe the Dutchman would fancy the challenge of resurrecting United, who are now in a major mess after some woeful form of late.

Mauricio Pochettino

The former-Tottenham head coach is now in charge of big-spending French outfit PSG. Pochettino has been perennially linked with the Manchester United job in the last half a decade. The Argentinian boss proved his tactical acumen at Spurs before his switch to the French capital.

The big question would be why would he quit his cushy number at PSG to move to United. It seems unlikely that Pochettino will be the next head coach of the Red Devils. However, in football, you just never know.
