Prediction and odds for the game: Inter (12/5) vs Liverpool (11/10)

We are backing the away win

When: Wednesday 16 February 2022, 20:00

Where: The Giuseppe Meazza

On Wednesday night, Inter and Liverpool clash at the Giuseppe Meazza, in the first leg of the Champions League last-16. The tie looks like it could be one of the most exciting in the first knockout stage of the competition.

Inter

Despite being top of the Italian top-flight table for much of the last few months, the Nerazzurri’s recent form has dipped slightly. Simon Inzaghi’s team dropped to second-place last weekend after a 1-1 draw against title rivals Napoli.

The men from Milan have now won just two of their last six games in 90 minutes in all competitions, although they have suffered just one defeat in the run.

Inter enjoyed a slightly inconsistent run in the group stages, as they won three, lost two and drew one of their six games. The two defeats were against La Liga leaders and Champions League royalty Real Madrid, though.

The Nerazzurri have don’t have a great recent home record in European football’s premium competition. They may have won their last two European games at San Siro, but they have also recorded just three wins on home soil in their last 11 Champions League matches.

Liverpool

This is a bad time to face Jurgen Klopp’s team, as the team from Merseyside are now unbeaten in their last nine matches in all competitions, having recorded six straight wins in the process. Despite the absence through international duty of the likes of Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah in recent weeks, the Reds have remained prolific, scoring at least two goals in five of their last six outings in all competitions.

Liverpool cruised through the group stages of the Champions League this season, winning all six group matches. The Reds also scored at least two goals in all six of the victories.

The visitors have been difficult to beat in this competition, as they have suffered just one defeat in their last 12 outings in European football’s elite competition. The only defeat in that run came against Real Madrid in the semi-final of last season’s competition.

Liverpool have a strong recent away record in the Champions League, winning six of their last eight away matches in the competition. Klopp’s team attacking prowess has been on full display of late in their away games in Europe, as the Reds have scored at least two goals in four of their last five matches.

Conclusion

Inter have looked good in recent months, but their recent results are making many connected with the Nerazzurri nervous. They have struggled to win the big games under Inzaghi.

We are backing Liverpool to record a victory, but it is likely to be tight, as Inter are well organised and will be strong in defence. The other bet we are taking a punt on is under 2.5 goals. The reason is that Inter’s strength is again Inter’s strong backline. They could frustrate the prolific Liverpool attack.

Our Tips: We are backing the away win at odds of 11/10 and/or under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 11/10. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
