Prediction and odds for the game: Liverpool (1/4) v Sheffield United (12/1)

We are taking a punt on under 2.5 goals scored.

When: Thursday, January 2nd 2020, Kick-off 8 PM

Where: Anfield

On Thursday night, Liverpool will look to continue their seemingly relentless march to the Premier League title when the Reds host Sheffield United at Anfield.

Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp’s team are currently 13 points clear at the top of the Premier League table heading into the midweek fixtures. Incredibly, the Reds also have a game in hand on their rivals at the top of the table.

The Merseysider’s have been formidable this season, winning 18 of their 19 league games so far this season. Jurgen Klopp’s team are also 36 matches unbeaten in the English top-flight.

A 1-0 home win over Wolves last time out was a rare league game in which the Reds did not score two goals, as they have now scored at least twice in nine of their last ten Premier League outings. Klopp’s team have also improved defensively of late, having kept four straight clean sheets in the English top-flight.

A big factor in their recent results is their home record at Anfield, as the Reds have recorded 17 consecutive wins on home soil in the Premier League while scoring at least two goals in 16 of those winning home encounters.

Sheffield United

The Blades have been one of the stories of the Premier League campaign so far. Chris Wilder’s team were one of the favourites to suffer relegation, yet they are currently just six points off the Champions League spots.

Last time out, the team from Yorkshire suffered a 2-0 defeat against reigning champions Manchester City. The loss was the Blades first away defeat of the season in the Premier League. The defeat also ended a four-game unbeaten run for the visitors, consisting of three wins and a draw.

Sheffield United’s relative success this season is based on the team having a superb defensive record. In fact, only Thursday night’s opponents have conceded fewer goals in the top-flight this season. The Blades defensive record has contributed to their last seven league outings producing under 2.5 goals.

Despite being hard to beat on their travels, the Blades have won just three of their ten matches on the road this season. Once again, low-scoring games have been the order of the day in those away matches, with under 2.5 goals scored in eight of their last ten outings in the top-flight.

Conclusion

Liverpool are like a winning-machine at the moment and we expect them to record a victory. However, the Blades have proven stubborn opposition for teams this season. Like the Blades games against Manchester City, which we predicted would produce under 2.5 goals, we are going for the same again in this clash. We are also backing Liverpool’s Sadio Mane to score anytime, which is not terrible odds at 10/11.

Verdict: Back the under 2.5 goals scored at odds of 13/10 and/or Sadio Mane to be an anytime goalscorer at odds of 10/11. (All odds are taken from Bet365).
